Why does copper turn green?

Outdoor copper slowly builds a surface patina through reactions with its environment.

What is happening?

Fresh copper is reddish. In air it first forms thin oxide layers, then further reactions with moisture and atmospheric compounds create a more complex surface.

The familiar green patina is not one universal pure substance. Its composition varies with the environment and can include copper carbonates, sulfates, chlorides and other compounds.

What changes it?

This layer can adhere strongly and slow further weathering. That is why old copper roofs and statues can remain covered by a stable green surface for a long time.

The useful idea

Everyday objects make the mechanism visible because several effects happen at once. Separating temperature, pressure, material and surface effects helps explain what you actually observe.

Try to notice this

Everyday science becomes clearer when one variable is changed at a time. Compare warm and cold conditions, a smooth and a rough surface, or a closed and an open container. Small differences often reveal which mechanism matters most.

The point is not to turn daily life into an experiment, but to connect what is visible with particles, energy, pressure and materials.
