5.844 g NaCl in 500 mL of solution
The molar mass of NaCl is about 58.44 g/mol, so 5.844 g corresponds to about 0.1000 mol. The final volume is 0.500 L. Therefore c = 0.1000/0.500 = 0.200 mol/L.
Use the final solution volume
Molar concentration is the amount of solute divided by the final volume of the solution. It is not generally the volume of solvent that was added. This distinction matters when preparing a solution in a volumetric flask.
If the solute is a hydrate or has a different chemical form from the formula entered, use the formula of the material actually weighed because its molar mass changes.
