Atomic radius

Atomic radius is not a single directly measurable hard boundary; several operational definitions are used, such as covalent, metallic and van der Waals radii.

The definition must be stated before comparing values. Periodic trends are useful, but different radius definitions should not be mixed.

Ionization energy is the energy required to remove an electron from a gaseous atom or ion in a specified state. Successive ionization energies refer to successive electron removals.

Its periodic pattern is powerful but not perfectly smooth because subshell structure, pairing and shielding matter.

Electronegativity is a model for an atom’s tendency to attract electron density when it is bonded.

Differences in electronegativity help us reason about bond polarity, but they do not turn bonding into a rigid binary classification.
