From shells to a more precise description

What does “electron configuration” mean?

An electron configuration describes how the electrons of an atom or ion are distributed among available quantum states. Sodium was previously shown as 2 · 8 · 1; we now zoom inside those broad shells.

The number · 1, 2, 3…

It gives the principal quantum number n — a first guide to the broad shell.

The letter · s, p, d, f

It identifies a subshell. These are historical labels inherited from spectroscopy.

The superscript · ², ⁶, ¹⁰…

It tells how many electrons occupy that subshell. 2p⁶ means six electrons in the p subshell of shell 2.

Where do s, p, d and f come from?

Before modern quantum mechanics, spectroscopists classified observed spectral-line series. The historical labels survived:

Today these are conventional labels associated with orbital-angular-momentum quantum numbers ℓ = 0, 1, 2 and 3, not everyday descriptions of modern orbitals.

Decode 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s¹

1s² gives 2 electrons in shell 1. In shell 2, 2s² contributes 2 and 2p⁶ contributes 6, giving 8. Then 3s¹ contributes 1 in shell 3. Total: 11 electrons — neutral sodium, Z = 11.

Reading the notation

What do 1s, 2p or 3d mean?

These are not element names. They describe parts of electron shells. In 2p⁶, “2” names the second broad shell, “p” names a category of part called a subshell, and “6” says that six electrons occupy it.

The letters s, p, d and f come from historical notation. At this stage their names matter less than their purpose: they describe electron organization more precisely than simple rings can.
