The decibel scale is logarithmic: a 10 dB increase corresponds to ten times the sound intensity.

Formula usedβ = 10 log₁₀(I/I₀)

Two worked examples

Example 1

An intensity of 1.0 × 10⁻6 W/m² corresponds to 60 dB.

Example 2

An 80 dB sound has 100 times the intensity of a 60 dB sound.

Good to knowThe reference intensity is I₀ = 1.0 × 10⁻12 W/m². This calculator concerns sound intensity level, not perceived loudness.
