Oganesson is not the “last possible element”. It is simply the highest atomic number whose discovery and name have completed the international recognition process. Beyond it, laboratories try to create nuclei that may exist for fractions of a second—or perhaps, in favourable regions of nuclear structure, longer.
Every step is difficult. Researchers must produce a nucleus extraordinarily rarely, detect its decay products and build a chain of evidence convincing enough to distinguish a new element from background events. The blank space after 118 is therefore not empty knowledge; it is active research.
