Acceleration calculator

Acceleration measures how quickly velocity changes. A negative result means the chosen velocity component decreases; it does not automatically mean the object is slowing down in every situation.

Formula useda = (v₂ − v₁) / Δt

Two worked examples

Example 1

Going from 0 to 20 m/s in 5 s gives a = 20/5 = 4 m/s².

Example 2

A car changing from 25 m/s to 15 m/s in 4 s has an average acceleration of −2.5 m/s².

Good to knowThe calculator uses v₁ and v₂ for initial and final velocity values.
