Average speed compares the distance travelled with the elapsed time. It does not describe every instant of the motion unless the speed is constant.

Two worked examples

Example 1

120 km travelled in 1.5 h corresponds to 80 km/h.

Example 2

At 5 m/s, covering 400 m takes 80 s, or 1 min 20 s.
