How to read these reference values

Reference values are useful for estimating an order of magnitude, checking a calculation and comparing unfamiliar quantities with familiar ones. They are not universal constants: the exact value can depend on the object, conditions and definition used.

Use the table as a scale, not as a replacement for a measured value. First identify the unit, then compare powers of ten. A difference of one power of ten means a factor of ten; two powers mean a factor of one hundred.

When a calculation gives a result far outside the expected scale, check the unit conversion, prefixes and exponent before assuming the physics is unusual.
