Compare the same quantities
A useful comparison starts with atomic number and electron configuration, then examines position: group, period and block. From there, compare properties that answer the question at hand—atomic radius and ionization energy for reactivity trends, electronegativity for bonding, or melting point and density for physical behaviour.
Do not infer every property from proximity in the table. Neighbouring elements can differ sharply when a subshell is filled, when magnetic behaviour changes, or when relativistic effects become important in heavy atoms.
