प्रकाश का अपवर्तन
जब प्रकाश अलग optical refractive index वाले माध्यम में प्रवेश करता है, उसकी phase velocity बदलती है और सामान्यतः propagation direction भी बदलता है। Snell का नियम angles को जोड़ता है जबकि frequency boundary पार करते समय स्थिर रहती है।
Refractive index
n=c/v_phase से optical refractive index परिभाषित होता है। Vacuum में n=1 और सामान्य transparent materials में visible light के लिए n>1। अधिक n का अर्थ कम phase velocity, लेकिन signal velocity और dispersion के सूक्ष्म प्रश्नों में interpretation अधिक जटिल हो सकती है।
Frequency source से निर्धारित रहती है और boundary पर continuous oscillation के कारण नहीं बदलती। इसलिए λ=v/f के अनुसार wavelength बदलती है।
Snell का नियम
n₁ sinθ₁=n₂ sinθ₂, जहाँ दोनों angles interface normal से मापे जाते हैं। यदि light lower n से higher n जाए तो ray normal की ओर मुड़ती है; higher n से lower n जाए तो normal से दूर।
Normal incidence θ₁=0 पर direction नहीं बदलती, फिर भी speed और wavelength बदल सकती हैं।

Wavefront explanation
Refraction को केवल 'light slows and bends' mnemonic से अधिक स्पष्ट रूप से wavefront continuity से समझा जा सकता है। Boundary पर phase matching tangential wave-vector component conserve करती है, जिससे Snell law निकलता है।
यह wave picture water waves और other wave systems में analogous refraction समझने में भी उपयोगी है।
Dispersion
Real materials में n wavelength/frequency पर निर्भर है। इसलिए white light के अलग colors अलग angles से refract हो सकते हैं—prism dispersion का आधार।
किसी material के लिए एक ही n value हर wavelength पर exact नहीं। Precision optics में wavelength और temperature दोनों specify करना पड़ सकता है।
Critical angle से संबंध
Higher n से lower n जाते समय यदि incidence angle पर्याप्त बड़ा हो तो Snell equation real transmitted angle नहीं देती। Critical angle पर θ₂=90° और sinθ_c=n₂/n₁। इससे आगे total internal reflection हो सकती है।
यह phenomenon fiber optics और prisms में उपयोगी है, पर evanescent field boundary के पार कुछ दूरी तक रह सकता है; 'कुछ भी बाहर नहीं जाता' microscopic level पर oversimplification है।
Apparent depth
पानी के भीतर वस्तु को हवा से देखने पर refracted rays पीछे extrapolate करने पर object shallower दिखाई दे सकती है। Near-normal small-angle approximation में apparent depth लगभग real depth/n होती है। यह geometrical image effect है, वस्तु वास्तव में ऊपर नहीं आती।
अभ्यास
Air to glass
n₁=1.00, n₂=1.50, θ₁=30°।
हल: sinθ₂=(1/1.5)sin30°=1/3, θ₂≈19.5°।
Normal incidence
θ₁=0°।
हल: θ₂=0°, direction unchanged।
Critical angle
glass 1.50 to air 1.00।
हल: θ_c=sin⁻¹(1/1.5)≈41.8°।
